Intern Class - Monday, April 26, 2010

Tonight was another wonderful opportunity to share some things with our intern class at AHS.  Here was the agenda:

  1. 5:30 - Introductions
  2. 5:45 - Teach Like a Champion - Simple steps to improve the classroom.
  3. 6:30 - Assessment for Learning – explain the paper that will be done for Anders.  Use power point to discuss AFL techniques.  Especially focus on Targets, Relate “grading” to learning, Limit attributes to individual achievement.
  4. 8:00 - Give them time to work on their paper.
Write a one page, 3 paragraph paper (at least) that explains your Assessment Philosophy.
  • How do you currently assess student learning?
  • What have been the biggest factors that have determined your assessment beliefs and practices?
  • How do you feel you will change and adapt in the 2010-2011 school year?
Here are the power points and video clips:

Video clips I used were from Teachers.tv a great site and useful resource for all teachers.

The Six Phases of Teaching

This time of year, we could all use a good smile:

Six Phases of Teaching from Mr. Duez on Vimeo.
This is a video I put together that is adapted from an email that made the rounds in the past few years.  It is a comic look at the profession of teaching.

I'll use the 6 Phases as an "ice breaker" next week during our History Path training through AVID.  I'll be doing the staff development with a couple of my colleagues.  It is always great to give back and share some of the great things I've gotten to see.  I am really looking forward to it.

Then on Thursday night next week, I'll be jumping on a plane and heading to San Diego to get training on how to teach the summer institute for AVID in History.  I am really looking forward to this.  It will be a great break from the routine and will be a wonderful opportunity to meet lots of new people.  It is always so invigorating to be around the very best teachers.  AVID has given me loads of opportunity.  This is just another great one.

April Fool's Fun

I am a very 'corny' teacher.  Lots of stupid puns, bad jokes and silliness.  But, the kids love it and come to expect it.  So, it's April Fool's Day.  What did they expect?

Here is my post to my World History kids:

Can't wait to see what their reaction is to that one.

Sadly, I have to grade them still... since it is a joke.  :(
